<![CDATA[ Gamesradar+ ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com Fri, 12 Jul 2024 08:42:17 +0000 en <![CDATA[ The fan-made version of the original Fallout 3, which is an isometric RPG that's way different from Bethesda's version, is now playable on Nexus Mods ]]> The canceled Fallout project codenamed Van Buren, which was original Fallout developer Black Isle's second stab at making Fallout 3, is now more accessible than ever thanks to a fan-made version's release on Nexus Mods (via DSOGaming and PC Gamer).

If you're unfamiliar with Van Buren, it was a wildly different take on Fallout 3 from what was ultimately released by Bethesda after it acquired the IP from Black Isle parent company Interplay. Chiefly, it was an isometric RPG with a top-down perspective more in line with the first two Fallout games, and its story centered around an accused criminal whose guilt or innocence was to be decided by the player, dramatically altering which quests, skills, and communities were interactable.

With the meaty Fallout Yesterday - Van Buren mod now available on Nexus Mods, it's easier than ever to experience what's likely the closest thing to Black Isle's original vision for Fallout 3. Built in the Fallout 2 engine, Fallout Yesterday's recent 0.6 update added 30+ new quests, "multiple" vehicles, hundreds of new weapons, new traits, new perks, new main story content, "many" bug fixes, and more, although in its current state it can only be beaten with a "specific character build focused on Science and Repairs."

The arrival of the 0.6 update coincided with the project's release on Nexus Mods, not to mention the cracking open of its code on GitLab, making now an ideal time to not only play it but toy around with the code if you're keen. Of course, it's worth noting that much of Van Buren ended up in 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, including the American Southwest setting and the ability to decide on elements of your character's backstory. Still, purists will likely appreciate the faithfulness of Fallout Yesterday to the original source work.

Find out where Fallout: New Vegas ranked on our list of the best RPGs ever.

<![CDATA[ 5 years from launch, co-op zombie shooter World War Z launches free update set in an apocalyptic hellscape that just so happens to be where I live ]]>

As if the punishing desert climate, abundance of venomous reptiles, and worsening air pollution weren't enough to declare Phoenix, Arizona an apocalyptic hellscape, my home city is now being invaded by flesh-eating zombies in a new World War Z update some five years after launch.

The harsh city's deserved ribbing aside, it's not often I get to see the place I live get video game-ified. Although you can't see much outside of the new map - an abandoned military museum - you also can't mistake the non-native palm trees we plant to trick ourselves into thinking we live in San Diego or the jagged, cacti-dotted mountains surrounding the valley.

World War Z: Battle of Arizona is a free update available with the upgraded Aftermath version of the game, but the new Horde mode XL Phoenix map is exclusive to PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The update also includes a paid DLC pack that comes with a new Kukri melee weapon and four new weapons skins for the DE50 pistol, 1877 SBL rifle, TMP5 SMG, and M500 shotgun.

Everything else is free for all players regardless of platform, such as the new 'Improving Bag' power-up that gives you a unique boost to strikes, more ammo capacity, and one additional equipment slot in PvE and Horde mode. Then there's the nifty new customizable player portrait frames that'll display on the scoreboard in lobbies to show off your undead personality.

Finally, the update adds a quality of life change that should make it a heck of a lot easier to come back from a battle that's going south: you can now change your class one time between waves in Horde and Horde XL. That'll also make it possible to grind different classes more seamlessly, since you can simply swap classes and keep running the same session until you drop.

I'm honestly still a little shocked that Saber is still supporting World War Z five years on from its rocky launch. And most of the new additions are totally free! Couple that with the limitless potential for jokes at the city I love to hate, and I reckon it's time to give ol' World War Z another chance.

I remember really trying to shape it into the Left 4 Dead-sized hole in my heart at launch but struggling with performance issues and the relative lack of content, so I'm hopeful all that's been sorted out by now. If not, at the very least I'll get to look around and go, 'Hey that's where I live!' and be thankful that, for the time being, rattlesnakes and bad drivers are still the most dangerous things around here.

Elsewise, here are the best co-op games we recommend playing with a friend (or nemesis).

<![CDATA[ CD Projekt dev defends The Witcher 3's "overdone" Witcher Sense clue mechanic: "At the time it was really fresh," even if "we've kind of overcooked it" by the end ]]> The Witcher 3 players will surely remember how much time ol' Geralt spends with his nose all but glued to some tracks, following his aptly named Witcher Sense down a trail of clues in search of a monster or missing person. It's one of the creakier elements of an RPG that, by all rights, has aged pretty immaculately, and even CD Projekt Red's Paweł Sasko, now associate game director on Cyberpunk 2077 sequel Project Orion, agrees it was "overcooked" by the time the credits rolled, even if it was novel for the time.

In a fascinating bit of development insight, Sasko discussed the clue mechanic in an interview with Flow Games. "When we started The Witcher 3, we felt that the loop with the clues was kind of fresh," he begins. "It was actually something that Danisz Markiewicz, he's an expert quest designer on my team, the two of us, we actually designed that whole loop. And bear in mind it's 2012 - at that time I think you had one Batman [Arkham] game out, and that was it. I think all other games that have that gameplay loop with clues weren't out on the market yet. You didn't have any Tomb Raiders, the new Deus Ex games weren't out yet. All of the things that, right now, we know that we're so tired of, of having clues in the game and investigating them."

The timeline here, with development well underway in 2012 ahead of The Witcher 3's 2015 release, again demonstrates how games may reflect the trends of their production cycle, not necessarily the trends of their launch window. Games take a long time to make, it turns out, and as complex, multi-discipline projects, they can be hard to adjust. If you set an 18-wheeler rolling down a hill, it's not going to turn on a dime. Player tastes, meanwhile, can change in an instant, especially toward once-novel mechanics that become commonplace or genres that become saturated.

"But at the time it was really fresh, it was something different," Sasko adds. "And when we were doing it in 2012, we felt it was a great way to do it. Then we did Witcher 3 with it, and one of our conclusions was, ok, we've kind of overdone it, we've kind of overcooked it. There was so much of it in the base Witcher game that, when approaching Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine [DLCs], we were thinking, when we are doing those clues, let's try to do it more consciously, let's try not to have long strings of clues. Clue after clue after clue after clue."

Sasko points to the overall pacing of the experience, and reckons that excessive clues could hurt the flow of the game. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine noticeably improved on the clue problem, but for overall pacing, Sasko points to Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty as CDPR's crowning achievement.

"There, that pacing is really, really well-crafted," he says of the DLC. "But already in Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, you could see that we'd learned. There were no situations like in The Witcher 3 where it's like, 'Oh god another blood trail, marks from the foot of a monster. How many times can I go through this?' All of those conclusions came in, and that's why it was just a better work."

The first quest CD Projekt made for The Witcher 3 led to the best one in the RPG: "There are quests that are not that great, and we're very much aware of that."

<![CDATA[ "Don't bank on being the next viral hit": Manor Lords publisher urges other studios to "take care of all the devs" instead of hunting for their golden goose ]]> Manor Lords publisher Hooded Horse has shared some advice for both developers and publishers navigating viral success, recommending an even-handed approach over a hasty search for hits.

One-person developer Slavic Magic achieved monumental success with its debut title Manor Lords no matter how you slice it, beating launch records that had long been held by titans of the genre like Cities: Skylines and Civilization 6. Even so, Hooded Horse struck a humble tone in a May interview with Game Developer, arguing that it's "a little unfair to judge us" on Manor Lords' success alone because "publishers shouldn't be judged by their biggest hit."

In an insightful interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender expanded on the holistic lens through which the publisher views its catalog of games. Spurning the perpetual chase for a golden goose that'll please investors, Bender seeks to maintain a business model that doesn't result in any financial pressure that might trickle down to the developer level.

"Sustainability is something we think about a lot," he said. "But usually we think about it in relation to developers. So we're in an interesting situation - we never took money from, like, venture capitalists, or private equity, or international conglomerates, or anything that would put pressure on us. In fact, we even wrote into our bylaws that we can prioritize other things over profits, like artistic integrity and fair treatment."

Manor Lords overview

Without naming names, Bender railed against publishers that treat their business like a venture capitalist firm, investing in several projects at once knowing full-well the majority of them will flop but hoping for just one viral success to carry the whole thing. "It's just a horrible way to think about things, right? It's opportunistic and predatory," Bender said. "People are trusting you with their lives and dreams, they're trusting you with the future of their studio and their employees."

I don't have the time or the insight to explain the intricacies at the center of the layoff crisis battering the industry this year, but a common theme sure seems to be companies rejecting the long road in the interest of short-term profits that'll look good in quarterly financial reports. All too often that materializes in redundancies among teams whose projects didn't immediately meet or exceed sales expectations, even if the larger studio they're under has historically performed well.

Bender went as far as to urge players themselves to spend their money on games backed by publishers who "take care of all the devs, especially the ones that might be struggling." As for developers, he advised they take a close look at any publisher they're considering as a potential buyer and how they care for a stable of developers whose performance on the sales charts will invariably differ.

"What you do for the median game, and what you do for the game that struggled the most, and how you're trying to come back, how you continue to put your efforts into all your games fairly, and live up to the obligations of what you promised those developers, when they trusted their game to you - that means so much more, in terms of whether players should trust a publisher and say, 'oh, I'll try their next game'," Bender said. "That shouldn't be based on the viral hit. And whether a developer who's considering a publisher should trust that publisher, because don't bank on being the next viral hit."

We don't give business advice, but we do have some clutch Manor Lords tips any aspiring land baron should heed.

<![CDATA[ The happiest dwarves in gaming get even happier as Italian dwarf metal band releases 5-minute anthem for co-op hit Deep Rock Galactic: "It's been on loop for an hour now" ]]> It must be a day that ends in Y, because it's a glorious day to be a Deep Rock Galactic fan. The most wholesome community of dwarfs in all of gaming is finally living out one of its greatest dreams: a full-fat collaboration with Italian dwarf metal band Wind Rose, which has just released a five-minute track styled after DRG's iconic motto, "Rock and Stone," via Napalm Records.

"Dwarfs from around the world, we heard you!" Wind Rose said in a tweet. "We teamed up with Deep Rock Galactic to release our new single 'Rock And Stone', which will be the ultimate anthem of Dwarf Metal!"

Wind Rose is technically a power metal band, but the group's love of dwarven themes, from tracks like "Drunken Dwarves" and "Mine Mine Mine," to the consistently armored and bearded presentation, has earned them the dwarven metal crown.

The new song "Rock and Stone" is, to put it mildly, more of that. To put it less mildly, this may well be the song to point to if anyone understandably asks you what the heck dwarf metal is. The titular phrase comes up about a thousand times, it's chock-full of Deep Rock Galactic references, the music video has battle axes and chain guns, and I think we can all get behind the unifying theme here: "United we stand, divided we fall. If you don't Rock and Stone, you ain't coming home." Words to live by.

Naturally, the Deep Rock Galactic community is over the moon. A developer – sorry, dwarveloper – from DRG studio Ghost Ship Games shared the video with the game's official Reddit, and the comments on the post, much like those on YouTube and Twitter, yet again reveal a degree of love and camaraderie that any multiplayer game would kill for.

"For those about to rock and stone, we salute you," reads the top comment, from Rough_Button8832.

"It's been on loop for an hour now," chimes in LukeMaster12_ITA. (It's been on loop the entire time I've been writing this article, too.)

"Have been listening to it on repeat since this morning. Brings a tear to me eye. Rock and stone in the heart, lads," echoes RangerTursi.

If you want to experience this dwarven power up close and personal, Wind Rose is currently on tour, with its next few shows hitting Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and more.

The hard-to-put-down Deep Rock Galactic roguelike has already killed over 36 million Dwarves, but rest assured, "management is happy with your performance."

<![CDATA[ Amazon who? Here are 8 Newegg PC deals I'd use to build a rig ahead of Prime Day ]]> I've turned shopping for new PC parts into something of a Prime Day tradition, but I often find myself browsing Newegg over Amazon. This year is no different, and the eggy retailer actually has a bunch of component offers that could help you build a custom rig for less, particularly if you're on a budget. So, to save you from hardware hassle this summer, I've put together a list of my favorite Newegg deals to help you assemble a new build or spruce up your existing system.

It might sound like a gag, but not all the best Prime Day gaming deals are exclusive to Amazon. I mean, the retailer technically hasn't invited the likes of Newegg to its summer party, but that won't stop it from standing outside on the lawn with a bunch of its own Prime Day gaming PC offers. For what it's worth, the California-based hardware store has some tasty discounts to hand out, as you can grab Intel's Core i7-12700K CPU for just $189.99 (originally $449.99) and I'm hyped to see the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 for slightly less at $534.99 down from $559.99.

Without further ado, here are my favorite Newegg deals you can grab ahead of Prime Day. As I've already touched on, my picks include the core components I'd use to build a PC right now, but you'll also find some other interesting offers that could help you revamp your entire setup. I've also already price-checked everything the retailer currently has discounted at Amazon as well as the likes of Best Buy and Walmart, so you'll be saving as much as possible on new components and tech.

<![CDATA[ How to move your territory in Once Human ]]> Moving your Once Human territory is useful if you want to be near specific resources to farm or to reduce travel to any mission-critical areas. V the bird mentions moving your territory when you complete the main quest in Deadsville, letting you leave the Dayton Wetlands and head to the Broken Delta, but then doesn't really give much explanation beyond that, but it's actually a very simple process that starts with you just heading to where you want to move to. Here's how you go about moving your territory in Once Human.

Moving territory in Once Human explained

Once Human moving territory button prompt z

Now that you've headed to where you want to relocate to, you need to move your entire base and everything contained within your territory in Once Human by pressing B to open Build Mode, then pressing Z. This will begin the territory moving process and you'll see your entire territory appear as a white area with all your furniture and structures inside, including things like a garages for your Once Human motorcycle and other vehicles.

If your base structure is green, that means it's in a suitable location and you can place it by clicking. However, if your structures are red, that means you need to move to a better position – somewhere away from main roads and flatter ground is ideal. Not only will this be an eligible space for your territory but it will also give you plenty of room to expand as you'll be able to unlock more structures as you get more Memetics and find new and essential resources. If you've just got to the Broken Delta region near the start of the game, you should place your territory near some Once Human tin ore deposits to make crafting easier!

Once Human moving territory warning message

Once you've places your territory in a suitable spot, a warning message appears to let you know about a 10-minute cooldown moving cooldown that starts after you place your territory, so make sure you have it in the right place! The warning also tells you how much the move will cost in Energy Links. It also mentions that furniture and facilities will go into your Territory Terminal's Vault, letting you retrieve and redeploy them, though I found that all my facilities remained intact. Confirm the move and your base will instantly spring up in the new location.

<![CDATA[ Sony isn't doing anything with Bloodborne so one fan is basically porting it into Elden Ring – which it turns out is pretty hard, so they're also recruiting a modding army ]]> The solo modder behind Elden Ring's enormous Bloodborne-style overhaul mod, Graceborne, has begun looking for a team of modders to help their project reach its maximum potential, after admitting that taking on its "full scope" single-handedly would be "impossible."

Graceborne's alpha version first released last month on Nexus Mods, and even in this early, unfinished state, it's got some really cool features that can help make you feel like you're playing the Bloodborne PC port that's still not materialized. Will it ever? Who knows, but as far as Graceborne goes, you can already play with aesthetic changes to alter the appearances of certain bosses, new weapons including firearms and Bloodborne-style trick weapons, and even mechanics like gun parrying and quicksteps. Needless to say, Graceborne's changes go far deeper than just making everything look a bit darker, but creator corvianNoctis is now looking for help to make the mod's "full version a reality."

In a new YouTube video, corvianNoctis says: "Many people think there's a team behind this mod, but currently it's only me. I never expected the mod to get this much traction, but I knew from the start that undertaking Graceborne's full scope alone would simply be impossible.

"That is why I make this announcement, with the hopes of reaching out to fellow Elden Ring modders that would be interested in making Graceborne's full version a reality," the modder continues. They're encouraging prospective teammates to reach out via Discord, but "in the meantime," corvianNoctis will "keep adding content to Graceborne's alpha, in the form of new trick weapons, armor sets and boss remodels." In a thank you to supporters, they add: "I hope this project can reach its exciting goal."

Graceborne is still currently incompatible with Elden Ring's 1.12 update (the one that added support for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC), so players who want to experience it right now have to downgrade the version they're playing on to 1.10. With that said, corvianNoctis is already working on an update for this so Graceborne works with the latest version, so here's hoping that's available soon.

<![CDATA[ I'm begging Final Fantasy Tactics fans to check out this hidden strategy RPG gem that was locked away in PSP prison for 18 years ]]> PlayStation continues to surprise me by bringing its back catalogue of classics to modern consoles. Getting to play Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, and all the Ratchet & Clanks on PS5 signifies the company's renewed attitude toward backward compatibility, but I'm equally happy that certain overlooked gems can get a second life.

The next in line for a fresh audience is Jeanne d'Arc, a cult classic strategy roleplaying game that was once relegated to the PlayStation Portable, coming to PS5 and PS4 on July 16. The PSP game will be available in the PlayStation Plus catalogue, or you can just outright buy it if you'd rather not subscribe.

As you might have sussed out for yourself, Jeanne d'Arc is a historical epic that follows Joan of Arc, the most famous figure to crawl out of the Hundred Years War, and a girl that supposedly called upon divine visions to fight against British occupation - when you think about it, she's kind of the perfect heroine for a game that remixes a major historical event with added demons and possessions and magical abilities.

Jeanne d'Arc followed in the footsteps of Final Fantasy Tactics' winning isometric formula, and subsequently courted both passionate fans and eager wannabe fans alike since the game never came out in European territories until now, which is a very weird strategy for a game rooted in European history.

PlayStation's announcement says the game is "enhanced with up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters" that weren't available in the original 2006 release. Most of the PlayStation classics lineup are available for less than $10/£10, so if you're one of the loud people that keep begging for a Final Fantasy Tactics remake, here's your chance to temporarily scratch that itch.
