<![CDATA[ Gamesradar+ ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com Fri, 12 Jul 2024 08:42:36 +0000 en <![CDATA[ James Gunn unveils official Superman logo that's both nostalgic and new - and fans don't know how to feel ]]> James Gunn has unveiled the official logo for his upcoming Superman movie starring David Corenswet as the official Man of Steel – and fans are divided.

Though the logo might look like a more modern design, the shape itself is based on the symbol Superman wears in the comic Kingdom Come – but with the classic yellow-and-red color scheme instead of the comic's grittier red and black. Fans have been quick to compare the logo to that of Henry Cavill's Superman, which does have a bigger, and clearer S shape and is outlined in red – whereas the new logo has a small yellow outline around the red part of the shield (a callback to the Fleischer cartoons of the 1940s).

"It’s absolutely perfect," one fan said.

"Have to say it barely looks like an S though," one person wrote.

"What’s that? Because it’s not the Superman logo…" said someone else.

"People crying about this feeling 'too modern' as if it hasn’t been around for decades," said another.

"That's basically [the] Alex Ross Superman logo. It looks awesome. You just can't move on from Cavill," someone tweeted.

"I’m no one to get too hung up on a logo, but this one does nothing for me," wrote someone else.

Gunn also recently shared a first look at Corenswet in the full suit, which prompted fans to pore over the details. All we know for certain is that Gunn pulled from many different iterations of ol' Kal-El to make what truly feels like an homage to the classic American hero.

Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025. For more, check out our full breakdown of the new suit, or, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and shows you need to know about.

<![CDATA[ Netflix unveils disturbing first trailer for sequel to hit sci-fi horror movie ]]> Netflix has released the first trailer for The Platform 2, a sequel to the streamer's surprise sci-fi social commentary hit.

Per the official synopsis, the sequel takes us back to the world of The Platform, a "large, tower-style 'Vertical Self-Management Center' prison that houses various criminals. The dozens of floors house two occupants per floor and a free-floating platform delivers food to them on a daily schedule."

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia returns to direct from a screenplay he wrote with David Desola, Pedro Rivero, and Egoitz Moreno. The cast includes Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena, and Oscar Jaenada.

The brief clip, which can be viewed below, is filled to the brim with blood, dead bodies, cannibalism, and fire raining from the sky. As if the first film wasn't upsetting enough, it looks like we're in for another sick, sad time.

The flagship film, which sits at an 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73% audience score, starred Ivan Massague, Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan, Emilio Buale Coka, Mario Pardo, Eric L. Goode, Txubio Fernandez, and Alexandra Massangkay. The Platform had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival where it took home the People's Choice Award for Midnight Madness as well as a streaming deal with Netflix.

The Platform 2 is set to hit Netflix on October 4. For more, check out our list of the best Netflix movies to add to your streaming queue right now, or, check out our guide to the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ A 52-episode animated series based on classic toys was finished over 4 years ago, but even the creator doesn't know where it is ]]> The creator of an unreleased animated Micronauts series has revealed that he doesn't know what happened to the show after it was completed over four years ago and has asked Hasbro for answers.

In response to a prompt tweet that read "What canceled project do you wish happened?", Eric Rogers wrote, "MICRONAUTS. 52 half hours fully produced. I was the co-creator/EP/head writer. Ask Hasbro what they’re doing with it because no one there will tell me. We locked that last episode in January 2020."

When someone replied asking to clarify what he meant by "fully produced," Rogers clarified, "Everything locked and loaded and ready since JANUARY 2020, dude."

Rogers is also the creator of Angry Birds Mystery Island and Skylanders Academy and has written for other animated series like Futurama and Teen Titans Go!.

"By the way… I just want ONE PERSON at Hasbro to tell me what their plan is," he added. "It’s almost 5 years since we finished. Tell me you canned it. It’s a tax write-off. You lost it on the train like the Beastie Boys did with HOT SAUCE COMMITTEE PT 1. But… nothing? Yeah… no."

Micronauts originated in the '70s as (you guessed it) small action figures – around 3 inches in height. Several comic book series based on the figures have also been published over the years, including by Marvel Comics and Image Comics.

Boulder Media, which was then a subsidiary of Hasbro Studios, first began to develop an animated Micronauts series in 2018. However, in 2020, Entertainment One took over Hasbro's production wing, before it was sold to Lionsgate in 2023.

As for other toy adaptations, a Matchbox car movie is on the way from Skydance and Mattel Films, directed by Extraction helmer Sam Hargrave. The film doesn't have a release date yet.

<![CDATA[ Mike Flanagan is bringing back a relic of the 2000s – the director's commentary – in the best possible way for horror fans ]]> Remember DVD commentaries? Sure, they haven’t quite gone the way of the media dodo just yet, but in a world of podcasts, chit-chats, and gimmick interviews, it appears that a director sitting around to talk shop – or more, in the case of Ben Affleck on Armageddon – is a relic of the past.

Thank goodness, then, for horror supremo Mike Flanagan. The director, best known for Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, is launching Directors Commentary, a new podcast that aims to be part-interview, part-director’s commentary.

"I’m so excited to introduce you all to DIRECTORS COMMENTARY, my new podcast with Spectrevision Radio," Flanagan wrote on Twitter.

"In each episode, I’ll interview a filmmaker about their career, and then watch one of their films with them for a real-time watch-along commentary track that can be played with the film itself. Our first episode, featuring Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett… and their wonderful film Ready or Not."

Happily, the premiere episode is split into two parts – so those who want to pop on 2019 horror-comedy Ready or Not and watch along can do so while pretending it’s 2005 again. It's currently available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other podcast platforms.

Mike Flanagan isn’t just sticking to podcasts, however. He has written a segment for Shudder’s popular V/H/S anthology. Kate Siegel, Flanagan's wife and collaborator, is directing.

Flanagan’s new Exorcist film, described as a ‘radical’ new take, is set to hit theaters on March 13, 2026 – Friday the 13th, fittingly.

<![CDATA[ George RR Martin says a big dragon question will be answered in The Winds of Winter ]]> A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin has promised answers to a big dragon question is on the way – and we'll find out more in The Winds of Winter and beyond.

In a lengthy post on his Not a Blog page, Martin shared his meditations on various dragon-related topics, and he also slipped in an intriguing tease about what we might learn about these majestic creatures in his future works.

"They bond with men… some men… and the why and how of that, and how it came to be, will eventually be revealed in more detail in THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING and some in BLOOD & FIRE. (Septon Barth got much of it right)," he wrote, fairly cryptically.

Of course, we see plenty of these bonds between dragon and Targaryen (or Velaryon) in the Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon TV shows, which are adapted from Martin's works. Blood and Fire seems to be the upcoming second volume of Fire and Blood, the Targaryen history that forms the basis of House of the Dragon. The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, meanwhile, are the highly (highly, highly, highly) anticipated final two books in the Song of Ice and Fire series, which Game of Thrones is adapted from.

As for Septon Barth, as revealed in The World of Ice and Fire, he thought bloodmages in Old Valyria created dragons from wyverns. In-universe, his theories are pretty derided, but it would seem he's at least close to the answer.

But, Martin's most recent update on The Winds of Winter might be a little disappointing. He confirmed it's still not done just yet, but did promise that, when it is done, we'll all hear about it.

House of the Dragon season 2 continues weekly on Sky and NOW in the UK and HBO in the US. For more on the show, check out our deep dives on:

<![CDATA[ The Boys season 4 episode 7 recap and Easter eggs: Tensions build towards what's set to be a thrilling finale ]]> The Boys season 4 episode 7 - titled 'The Insider' - follows on from what is arguably the most NSFW instalment of this season. As I'm sure you all remember given how fucked up it was, last week's episode saw an alt-right cocktail party take a nasty turn as Hughie ended up in Tek Knight's sex dungeon and Neuman convinced a bunch of rich assholes to back her in invoking the 25th amendment. Oh, there was also the small matter of the reveal that Joe Kessler only exists in Billy's head!

Events are clearly escalating as we build to the season finale, with this week's penultimate episode further ratcheting up the tension. Ryan is having doubts which causes issues for Homelander, MM has to face an impossible decision, and Sage's apparent lack of progress with her masterplan is leading to frustration. Elsewhere, The Boys run into a shape-shifting Supe who means trouble.

There's therefore plenty to unpack, so join us as we dive right into The Boys' latest episode. Warning! The following features plenty of spoilers for The Boys season 4 episode 7, so make sure you have watched the latest episode before reading on!

A musical interlude

We open on the rehearsal for the Christmas special of Vought's musical-comedy show Avenue V, where Ryan becomes uncomfortable as he discusses antifa with a puppet version of A-Train, unhappy that they are advising kids to report on their parents. The frustrated Ryan comes home to a present from Billy of a Butcher family photo, whilst Homelander leaves him a voicemail telling him to "suck it up" when it comes to the show. Later during the live version, Ryan tells the crew to stop as he delivers his own message to the audience about how family is all that you've got.

And that isn't the only thing causing issues for Homelander, who tells Sage that he and his right-hand woman Firecracker will take over finding the leak. He tells Sage to instead focus on preparing 'the shooter' for the inauguration on January 6th.

Meanwhile The Deep's romance with octopus girlfriend Ambrosius is fracturing due to his sexual relationship with Sage. Later, Ambrosius reveals that she knows about his tryst and they have a fight, which results in him killing her. This has a huge impact on The Deep who tells Homelander he finally has "clarity" and is willing to kill whoever he needs to.

It seems that everyone is having problems, which for Annie at the start of the episode comes in the shape of mommy issues. Her mother is shocked about the abortion and has been ignoring her calls. More crucially though she accidentally reveals that Hughie saved the Starlight suit, much to Annie's dismay.

Later at The Boys HQ Butcher returns informing the group that Sameer has been working for him creating more of the virus - the news that it could lead to a 'Supe genocide' doesn't go down well. Billy also reveals that he managed to get Frenchie out of jail as they needed his help when it came to the virus - they promise it will be strong enough to top Homelander but not cause a global pandemic.

MM puts Billy back in charge of The Boys following his panic attack in the last episode. He gives his family money to escape whilst things are heating up in the US - his ex-wife Monique responds by kissing him and asking him to come with them. A-Train then pays MM a visit, delivering some harsh realities that encourages Marvin to stay and fight. Naturally the news disappoints Monique.

Now leader of The Boys once more, Butcher takes Annie and Hughie with him to enter a suspect's home where they find files with detail of assignments for January 6 - Singer's rally. They also discover a bruised woman hiding in a closet, who then attacks them. During the chase she starts peeling off her skin taking on a new appearance, revealing that she is a shape-shifting Supe. That only means one thing - trouble.

Doppelganger delight

Following that Hughie pays Neuman a visit in a last-ditch attempt to beg her to stop with these dangerous plans - she doesn't but she does say she's sorry to hear about the death of his dad.

Meanwhile The Deep and Black Noir visit The Boys HQ, where they fight Annie and Butcher. A-Train comes in to save the day revealing that he's been betraying Vought. He does a runner after defeating the Supes taking out his tracking chip, whilst The Boys evacuate.

Homelander and Firecracker have more luck on their mission, visiting a nervous Webweaver who reveals that he has been sharing information with The Boys. Homelander responds exactly how you would expect him to do so, tearing Webweaver's body in half. It's very gruesome.

Upon returning to the Vought Tower Firecracker and Homelander learn of A-Train's betrayal. She comforts the heartbroken Supe, whilst Sage makes things worse by revealing she knew A-Train was the leak all along. And not only that, but she was feeding him information to give to The Boys that she wanted them to know, it all being part of her big masterplan. An angry Homelander fires her from The Seven and on Sage's way out she bumps into Black Noir and The Deep, where it's revealed she's been sleeping with both of them.

Back at the makeshift lab, Frenchie and Kimiko open up to each other after he avoided her visitations in jail. She reveals why she can't speak, with a flashback showing a young Kimiko murdering another girl without making a sound during her time with Shining Light. After that, she was unable to speak again. In the flashback we also see Kimiko fight the mysterious woman she keeps encountering this season. Her and Frenchie both wonder how they can possibly forgive themselves, saying that once the virus is ready they should set Sameer free despite Butcher's wishes.

Sameer reveals that with Frenchie's help the virus is now good to go - but in a shock move he injects Kimiko with it. However, before it starts spreading Frenchie amputates the infected leg saving Kimiko. He now hopes to be able to recreate the virus from that leg.

Celebrating at a bar after, Butcher collapses as the imaginary Joe Kessler watches on. At home, Hughie tells Annie he visited Neuman - he's interrupted when she comes in wearing the Starlight suit, saying that she wanted to try it on. They then have sex whilst she's in the suit, but later that night as Annie opens the safe to take the laptop with all their information on it, it's revealed that she's the shape-shifting Supe not actually Annie. That's because the real Annie has been kidnapped (by the woman who took a selfie with her at the bar earlier) and is chained up in a basement somewhere. And so the episode closes, setting events up neatly for what is sure to be an exciting finale.

The Boys season 4 episode 7 Easter eggs

The Boys

Tilda Swinton: Following her cameo earlier on in the season, the actor once again returns to voice The Deep's octopus girlfriend Ambrosius. Given that she dies during this episode, this will be the last time we hear Swinton's dulcet tones in The Boys.

Black Noir: During this episode it's revealed that the new Black Noir is able to fly, which adds a fun twist to the fight scene. It's also a smart nod to the fact in the comics he's a clone of Homelander who, of course, possesses the power of flight.

Shape-shifting Supes: This episode introduces a new shape-shifting Supe into the mix, one who poses as Annie which means that trouble lies ahead. However, as Butcher mentions, we have come across some before in The Boys - most notably a character named Doppelganger who worked for Vought in both seasons 1 and 2.

The anti-Supe Virus: This has repeatedly been a feature this season but here we see it in action as Sameer stabs Kimiko with it. It was first introduced in spin-off show Gen V and you can learn more about it with our Supe Virus guide.

The Boys Season 4 episodes 1 - 7 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video right now with new episodes dropping every Thursday. For more on The Boys, check out the rest of our coverage:

The first trailer for My Old Ass, starring Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella has arrived – and yes, we will be seated.

Written and directed by Megan Park, the cast includes Maddie Ziegler (Fitting In), Kerrice Brooks (The Prom), Percy Hynes White (Wednesday), Maria Dizzia (Orange is the New Black), Seth Isaac Johnson (Love in Full Swing), and Carter Trozzolo. This marks Park's second feature film, the first being The Fallout starring Jenna Ortega.

<![CDATA[ The Shining star Shelley Duvall dies aged 75 ]]> Shelley Duvall, the star of The Shining and frequent collaborator of director Robert Altman, has died at the age of 75.

Duvall, who had mostly been retired from acting since 2002, died at her home in Texas due to complications from diabetes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley," her partner Dan Gilroy told the publication.

She was best known for playing Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining. Wendy is the wife of Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, who slowly goes mad after being hired as the off-season caretaker at the Overlook Hotel.

Duvall also worked closely with Altman on seven movies throughout the '70s. She made her acting debut in 1970's Brewster McCloud after the director met her at a party and decided to cast her, and was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in his 1977 psychological drama 3 Women. Their other collaborations include McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, and Popeye, in which she played Olive Oyl opposite Robin Williams' titular sailor.

And it wasn't just Altman and Kubrick – Duvall worked with no shortage of major filmmakers in her decades-spanning career. In the '80s, she starred in Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits and Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, while in the '90s she starred in movies made by Steven Soderbergh (1995's The Underneath) and Jane Campion (1996's The Portrait of a Lady).

In the last 20 years, Duvall only appeared in two movies. Before retiring in 2002, she appeared in the comedy Manna From Heaven, and then made a return to movies in 2023 with independent horror The Forest Hills.

<![CDATA[ Martin Scorsese is a big fan of MaXXXine and the rest of Ti West's horror trilogy ]]> The X trilogy officially has Martin Scorsese's seal of approval. The Killers of the Flower Moon director has sung the praises of Ti West's slasher series, which began with 2022's X and culminated with the recently released MaXXXine, for being a "different type of horror."

He told the New York Times that he thought each film in the trilogy represented a "different type of horror, related to different eras in American moviemaking." X, is "the ’70s, the slasher era", 2023's prequel Pearl is "'50s melodrama in vivid saturated color", and MaXXXine is "'80s Hollywood, rancid, desperate." They are "three linked stories set within three different moments in movie culture, reflecting back on the greater culture," Scorsese added.

In the NYT's words, the filmmaker thought that "by smuggling thoroughly modern ideas into films that were also steeped in the aesthetics of the past, West had done something bold and thoroughly cinematic".

MaXXXine, the conclusion to the trilogy, picks back up with X's final girl, adult film star and aspiring actor Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), who has finally made it to Hollywood. She may not have left her bloody past entirely behind her, though, as a serial killer is stalking the streets of LA and targeting young women. Alongside Goth (who also played Pearl in X and its subsequent prequel), Halsey, Elizabeth Debicki, Lily Collins, and Kevin Bacon joined the franchise for round three.

MaXXXine is out now in theaters. For more, check out our guide to the best upcoming horror movies still on the way in 2024.

<![CDATA[ New body horror with near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score unveils its twisted first trailer ]]>

Demi Moore goes to disturbing lengths to recapture her youth in the twisted first trailer for Revenge director Coralie Fargeat's new comedy-tinged body horror The Substance. Think The Neon Demon meets Bodies Bodies Bodies...

Also starring Hugo Diego Garcia, Dennis Quaid and Drive-Away Dolls' Margaret Qualley, the movie follows Elisabeth Sparkle, the host of a hit aerobics show who gets fired on her 50th birthday due to her age. Dejected, Elisabeth doesn't think twice when she's approached by a mysterious scientist and offered their lab's latest experiment: a chemical that is said to revert the user back to their "younger, more beautiful, more perfect" selves.

The promo, which you can watch above, doesn't give all that much away besides that basic premise, though we do seem blink-and-you'll-miss-them shots of Quaid's creepy salesman, a neon-green 'Activator', and an older Elisabeth getting into a car accident. Elsewhere, her younger version kicks a door down and screams, covered in blood. In short, the dream she's been sold isn't quite as dreamy as it first appeared...

Earlier this year, Fargeat was awarded the gong for Best Screenplay for The Substance at Cannes Film Festival 2024, which showcases just how much of a treat we're in for with the dark-looking flick...

Released in 2017, Fargeat's bloody thriller Revenge wowed genre fans with its action-packed spin on I Spit on Your Grave. Featuring Vincent Colombe, Guillaume Bouchède, Kevin Janssens, and Matilda Lutz, it centers on Jen, as she sets out to punish the three men who assaulted her and left her for dead in the Los Angeles desert. It currently holds an impressive 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Substance is set to release in theaters on September 20. For more, check out our our list of the most exciting upcoming movies heading our way in 2024 and beyond.
